Research and planning

Hey guys! On this blog post i decided to inform you guys about the Horror genre. I have spent the day researching things about the Horror genre that I want to share with you guys. The horror genre consists of creating a suspenseful, surprising, confusing, and scary setting. Making the audience anxious and scared as to what will occur next. The targeted audience usually tends to be around their 15-25 years of age. This genre is so indulged in a young targeted audience because of the thrill that most young adult and teenagers get from it. The camera shots seen in horror films are close-ups, tracking shots, mid shot, long shot, dolly shot, extreme close up, high-angle shots, zooming out, zooming in, All of these shots are commonly seen in horror movies. Close-ups are usually seen on objects or the actors face, they usually try to display the actor’s emotions.Tracking shots helps the audience feel as if they are going right behind the character, these shots help the movie draw its audience in to the setting. Mid-shot shows only up to the actors hip, which is seen when the character is walking somewhere or standing. Long shots are used to show the whole body expression and to show the audience the setting where the actor is at. Dolly shots is when the person taking the shot is on a cart that is able to move along a straight placed tracks. This shot is used when the producers want to zoom in but want to make it feel more suspenseful. Extreme close-up is used to express an emotion. High-angles shows inferiority. Editing is also an important technique when its comes to horror films. Horror films usually use techniques such as cross cutting and jump-cuts. Cross-cutting help the producers guide the audience attention to where they want it to be not where the audience wants it to be. This can sometimes help create more of the suspense. Jump-cuts shows a series of shots right after another. Sound of horror films involves sounds that most of the audience can relate to in distress. When directors want to produce a horror film that involves a monster they tend to gather different animal sounds and play them all at once and may sometimes even play it backwards. King kong’s famous scream involves a mix of tigers and lions all being payed at once and they were played backwards. Sound effects are usually loud and off cutting such as screaming, machine saws, ex. Lighting also plays a crucial part on creating horror films. Candle lights are said to be good at creating a scary environment specially because the audience is not able to see anything other than the actor. Backlighting is good too because it obscures what is right in front of us.I hope to use this research that I have gathered when doing my portfolio project. This research will guide us as to what we should use to create a suspenseful setting. If my group and I decide to do a film based on the horror genre it will involve the techniques that I have mention on this blog-post.

Some recent Horror Films are: Halloween (2018), A Quiet Place(2018), Truth or Dare (2018), and The Nun (2018).
